Case Studies

Monitoring & Controls for
Reliable, Efficient Buildings

Case studies title over electric meter

Utilities, businesses, engineers and schools depend on PowerWise to understand energy use, reduce electricity costs, and evaluate and optimize heating systems.

In every one of these case studies, the data collected by PowerWise technology contributed to policy, standards, and/or best practices in these project areas. People trust PowerWise to give them data to provide insight into energy, buildings, and mechanical systems.

Representative Case Studies

Duke Energy Residential Energy Study

Duke wanted to understand how and when people use electricity in their homes. They used this information to predict how to provide electricity more efficiently when it is most needed.

Emera Maine Heat Pump Pilot Program

Emera Maine, a Maine electricity provider Maine, studied energy use of ductless heat pumps, also known as “mini-split” heat pumps.

Florida Solar Energy Center

This study involved placing environmental sensors throughout two solar retrofit homes and circuit-level electricity use sensors in the electrical panel. The investigators lived in the homes during the study, whose purpose was to help them determine the relative values of different types and levels of retrofit.

Smart Neighborhood Project

Alabama Power chose PowerWise to provide monitoring equipment for a high-tech neighborhood development. The Smart Neighborhood project involved monitoring overall electricity use and multiple circuits, water use, relative humidity, CO2, and temperatures. The refrigerators even had multimedia displays showing SiteSage dashboards. The Alliance to Save Energy awarded the Smart Neighborhood the 2019 Stars of Energy Efficiency Award.

Additional Cases

Reducing Energy Costs

A Canadian energy services company, Greenwave Innovations, identified a market opportunity when the federal government implemented a carbon tax. This company created a business model based on helping businesses and government entities reduce their energy costs. PowerWise provided the technology, training, and support to help the company move into this new market. They were able to help their clients and customers achieve significant savings on energy costs through controls and alerts on energy use and equipment conditions. Greenwave is an award-winning organization recognized for their impact on energy efficiency.

Intranet Building Management System

A Canadian oil and gas company had been using a legacy data collection system. The company wanted reports, alerts, and hardware integration. A key requirement was that the application run on their own internal intranet, with no connection to the cloud. PowerWise software engineers developed an application running as an isolated intranet, with graphic and email alerts within the intranet network.

The Merits of Ground Source Heat Pumps

A New England state offered customer rebates for new ground source heat pump installations. The state’s Department of Energy Resources (DOER) wanted to know how well these systems performed in the field. PowerWise teamed up with an installer in the area to install systems that measured thermal heating and cooling, as well as electricity consumption for the pumps, heating elements and controls. Using these data points, PowerWise analytics calculated BTUs, energy efficiency ratio, and coefficient of performance, and displayed the information in online dashboards.

Branded Enterprise Application

An energy service company (ESCO) had a basic monitoring solution for their clients. The ESCO wanted a more powerful application to improve their image and scale the business. PowerWise developed an enterprise solution, which included gateways, controllers, hardware integration, administrative tools, and analytics.

Deep Retrofit of a Large Residence

A Massachusetts homeowner enjoyed a large house, but did not like his high energy bills. He planned an ambitious project of improving the thermal envelope and replacing the heating, cooling, and hot water systems. First, he sourced energy monitoring equipment from PowerWise. Doing so established a baseline for energy use and costs for each mechanical system. After every step in his deep retrofit project, he was able to measure the energy savings. Plus, he used these numbers along with the investment to determine his payback time.
