Costs to Charge Electric Vehicles

Sensors,
Meters, and Apps

electric vehicle

Electric vehicles will likely play a big role in the future of transportation. But what does it cost to charge a vehicle? Monitor the circuit and find out!

The PowerWise office has an EV charging station. We meter the electricity used by this station and see an average cost of $60 - $90 per month. If you have a car charger, consider monitoring the electricity use to determine the savings / benefits compared to combustion engines.

How does this all work? Current transformers (CTs) clamp around the wires connected to the EV charging circuit. CTs wire back to the electricity meter. The meter is powered by a circuit inside the panel. The meter communicates with a gateway to send data to the cloud. An app reports on live power readings and historical energy use and costs for the EV.
